Deer Creek
Arizona
Located in the heart of Arizona's mineral-rich landscape, where ancient volcanic activity created the perfect conditions for fire agate formation.
The Geographic Wonder
Deer Creek sits within Gila County, Arizona, an area renowned for its geological diversity and mineral wealth. The region's unique geological history, marked by ancient volcanic activity approximately 20 million years ago, created the ideal conditions for fire agate formation.
The combination of silica-rich volcanic ash, iron oxide deposits, and specific temperature and pressure conditions found only in this area resulted in the creation of these remarkable gemstones with their characteristic iridescent fire.
The Desert Landscape
The Deer Creek area is characterized by its stunning Sonoran Desert landscape. Rugged mountains, deep canyons, and ancient rock formations create a dramatic backdrop for the mining operations.
This harsh yet beautiful environment has preserved the fire agate deposits for millions of years, protecting them beneath layers of volcanic rock and desert sediment until their discovery in 1979.
Mining Conditions
Desert Climate
Temperatures range from 40°F in winter to over 110°F in summer, requiring careful planning for mining operations.
Elevation
At approximately 3,500 feet above sea level, the mine sits in the transition zone between desert and mountain ecosystems.
Remote Access
The remote location has helped preserve the integrity of the deposits and ensures sustainable, controlled extraction.
Experience the Source
While the mine itself is not open to public tours for safety and preservation reasons, you can explore our collection of hand-selected specimens from this legendary location.
